How to say ‘Important’

Let’s talk about something important. The word important. 
Although I’m sure it already sounds great when you say it, I focused on a few nuances that will make your pronunciation just perfect:)

  1. At 2:38 “important” is misspelled “importnat”.

    I think it’s better to use a vowel in the third syllable.

    I hear a lot of im-PORT-ant or im-POR-ant these days, both of which I find dreadful.

I’m here because I’ve recently begun hearing more and more often a mispronunciation of this word in broadcast journalism (even on NPR, where one should expect to hear a strict adherence to proper pronunciation). Many reporters are saying something more like IM-POR-ENT, entirely disregarding the first T.
    When I used to hear this in speech many years ago, it seemed to be a regionalism, or was restricted to users of a form of “street speech”. However it seems now to have become more widespread, and it bugs the heck out of me!
