In Spanish we write it Coronel (and say it like with “r”, of course…), so i’ m pretty sure that in english a long time ago they used to write it with “r” also… and something just happened on the way that changed the spelling but you can still can hear the “r” on it

How could “colonel” be pronounced differently than “kernel”?
Colonel and kernel are homophones and pronounced exactly the same!
