It seems like last week’s OUGH extravaganza really hit the spot for many of you (if you missed it here it is: How to pronounce thought, though and tough.)
Today I’m taking it up notch as I discuss the OUGH when it follows TH+R.
So get your tongue ready and come practice in this week’s video:
How to pronounce: Through vs. thorough
TRANSCRIPT
Hi it’s Hadar and this is the Accent’s Way.
Your way to finding clarity, confidence and freedom in English.
Let’s talk about the pair ‘through’ and ‘thorough’.
through and thorough
They look almost the same and they sound almost the same but different.
So let’s talk about the difference between the two.
The first word is ‘through’ we begin with a TH sound. It’s a soft TH.
The tongue comes out for the TH to release air
and then you pull the tongue in to the middle of the mouth for the R.
Thr-, thr –
Make sure the tongue doesn’t touch anything on the way in.
So it doesn’t sound like ‘fru-‘ alright.
So you bring the tongue down for the R. thr-, thr-
and then it’s a long U as in ‘food’. Through
feels like there is a W at the end, right.
Thruw, thruw
She always comes through.
Through
The word ‘thorough’, ‘thorough’ also begins with a TH but instead of moving directly for the R
you actually have a vowel in between.
Thuh, thuh
It’s the ‘uh’ as in ‘cup’ sound. Thuh-
Only then you bring the tongue up for the R: thuh-row
thuh-row
and then you have a long O as in ‘go’: thuh-row.
‘Through’ – one syllable, ‘thorough’ – two syllables.
A thorough analysis.
She always comes through.
through – thorough.
That’s it. Pretty simple.
