How to pronounce ‘resolution’

It’s almost the end of the year.
You may look back at what you accomplished in 2015, or perhaps you’re already making plans for 2016.

At the beginning of each year, I like writing resolutions for the upcoming year.
This year I decided to share with you some of my resolutions and also, how to pronounce it:)

Pronouncing ‘resolution’:

TRANSCRIPT

Hey, it’s Hadar, and this is the Accent’s Way – your way to finding clarity, confidence, and freedom in English. And today we’re going to talk about how appropriately the word ‘resolution’. Resolution.

So, we begin with a ‘re’ sound. R – round your lips, pull the tongue in – there’s a lot of tension there engaged in the tongue – and then you open it to an E – ‘re’. Drop your jaw a little. ‘re’.

Then, the next syllable is ‘zuh’, ‘zuh’. It’s a schwa sound after a Z sound: ‘zuh’, ‘zuh’. ‘re-zuh’, ‘re-zuh’. So there is no ‘o’ sound there, although it’s spelled with an O. Resolution. Okay? It’s not ‘re-zo-lution’ –  ‘re-zuh-lution’.

Then we move on to the primary stress – LUW, LUW. It’s an L sound, a little heavy, and then an ‘uw’ vowel, it’s a long vowel. Also, the primary stress is always longer, louder and higher in pitch. We definitely hear it here: ‘re-zuh-LUW’. And then again, sh’n, sh’n, a reduced vowel. We shift from the ‘sh’ sound to the ‘n’ – sh’n. ‘re-zuh-LUW-sh’n’. ta-da-TA-da. Resolution. Resolution.

What’s your New Year’s resolution?

All right. Have a happy New Year, and I’ll see you next week next year. Bye.
